Inaugural Posting...
Welcome to my blog! I originally didn't pen this initial post for a "blog", so to speak. Instead, I wrote it this past Wednesday night (01/29/14) on the eve of my class' beginning the second semester of our DNP Nurse Anesthesia program. We have a group Facebook page where the 27 of us communicate with each other about school, assignments, social events, and just life in general. I posted this entry there, as a word of encouragement for us all as we begin this 2nd semester of a total of 9 in our SRNA-DNP journey at Union University. Afterwards, as I considered what I should include in my first blog post for this assignment, I decided that the message of those words I wrote for my classmates just three days ago summed up my thoughts fairly well. So as we begin this new semester and continue on our journey towards earning a DNP degree and becoming competent CRNAs, please read on to know my thoughts on getting back in the swing of things...
“The task ahead of us is never as great as the power behind us.”
–Ralph Waldo Emerson
For some reason, while I was working out this morning, the above quote just randomly popped in my head. I’m not quite sure why, but it probably had something to do with the lack of oxygen getting to my brain. I doubt it had anything to do with the fact that Pandora had me jacked up on MJ's, "Thriller" at the moment (sometimes Pandora can literally just read your mind).
Anyway, after thinking about it for a second as I struggled through some push-ups (despite the good tunes serenading me), I became aware of how it directly applies to each of us right now.
Tomorrow officially starts a brand new semester for us. One down, only eight more to go. If you’re like me, the ol’ anxiety level has already started to escalate a bit as I’ve printed out and thumbed through the syllabi, attempted to navigate through Google docs for the first time, and repeatedly measured the height (in feet) of the stack of textbooks for this semester that have accumulated on my desk.
Which leads me to the quote above and this reminder: We need not look too far in the past to quickly realize how far we’ve come. Sure, we’ve still a long way to go, but look at the successful way in which we tackled this last semester (by the grace of God).
As we press in to the second leg of our journey together tomorrow, the quote above reminds us that we truly have “power” and momentum in our corner. Power in the success we’ve experienced up to this point, power in the support from our families and friends, power in each other as we “trudge the trenches” together, and most importantly of all, power in and from God who has called each of us to be here and do this at this appointed time.
Sometimes we gotta just look at it like that...plain and simple. In doing so, it truly makes the task ahead not seem so bad.
As I’ve said before, personally, I wouldn’t want to be doing this with any other group than the 26 of you. Here’s to a great semester, gang. It's ours for the taking, so let's get after it!
