"It is finished." -Jesus (John 19:30)
Today is "Good Friday", and it is a very good day for those of us who know Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord. Each year, this day gets to me as I think about the amount of love that Christ had (has) for me...enough love to come and die an excruciating, cruel death...all for me. And to know that if I had been the only person on the face of this earth that He still would have done it is just mind-boggling to me. It feels me with emotion, conviction, and immense gratitude.
Yesterday in our pathophysiology class, our professor took time at the end of class to recount the physiological process behind Jesus' death. It was moving and powerful to hear him explain the agonizing process of crucifixion that the Romans inflicted on those who would bear the cross. By the conclusion of our professor's explanation, there was not a dry eye in the room.
To think of the crucifixion, and the glory of the resurrection and what the completion of that process means for us is humbling...and exciting! Death is defeated. Hell is defeated. Sin is defeated. Sickness is defeated. Worry and fear are defeated. And the list could go on and on.
In light of Christ's sacrifice and payment for me, it motivates me to live for and serve Him. Not in a futile attempt to earn my salvation (I would fail miserably within the first second of attempting that). But rather, to work out my salvation...to live in a continual state of gratitude, being mindful of the bottomless well of grace and mercy with which He saturates my everyday life.
Easter is great because it slows us down and reminds us of these truths. We celebrate his death, burial, resurrection, and the eternal life we now have with Him due to His payment for our sins. I pray, though, that this feels "new" to me and overwhelms me with gratitude each day of my life...never losing its wonder or being taken for granted. Hallelujah, what a Savior!
-HALLELUJAH, WHAT A SAVIOR-
Man of sorrows, what a name
For the Son of God who came
Ruined sinners to reclaim
Hallelujah! What Savior
Stand unclean, no one else could
In my place condemned He stood
Now His nearness is my good
Hallelujah! What a Savior
Hallelujah, praise to the one
Whose blood has pardoned me
Oh what a Savior,
Redeemer and King
Your love has rescued me
Lifted up was He to die
"It is finished!" was His cry
Now in Heaven lifted high
Hallelujah! What a Savior
When He comes, our Glorious King
All His ransomed home to bring
Then anew this song we'll sing
Hallelujah! What a Savior
Hallelujah! What a Savior
